The billionaire tech whizzes behind the Atlassian empire are set to reveal their secrets for startup success this Sunday on 60 Minutes.

60 Minutes reporter Liz Hayes meets the young tech entrepreneurs from Australia that have taken the world by storm – already two of Australia’s wealthiest men at the age of 39.

Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes are Australia’s first ever tech billionaires, having built software company Atlassian from scratch, now worth an eye-watering $50 billion.

Their software products are used by some of the world’s biggest institutions and companies, including the US Defence Department, NASA, Facebook and Twitter.

Mike and Scott met at university in Sydney. The pair quickly went from coding through all hours of the night, to building a multi-billion dollar empire with over 3000 employees worldwide and more than 130,000 customers.

Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes say their goal is to make our politicians recognise the need for Australia to have a thriving tech industry.

“You have to be able to build the future,” Mike Cannon-Brookes tells reporter Liz Hayes.

“You have to be thinking about what does the world look like in five years and building for that today.”

Without doubt, the Atlassian success story is an inspiration for other young Australians wanting to start their own tech companies.

But Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes say in order to stop our best and brightest from leaving Australia, the country needs its own Silicon Valley.

“[Australia] still has a long way to go before we’re kind of world-class,” Farquhar says.

“But I think we’re in a really great spot to become a tech hub.”
